HASTE—IT WAS A NEGATIVE trait Elizabeth possessed. For the most part, she never thought things through as far as consequences. She ran out the front door of Whitefield Hall in a pair of pumps not made for hiking on a dusty, potholed road in the middle of the country.

Elizabeth plopped down in her day dress on the green grass along the roadside and looked at the heel of the left shoe that had broken. There was no fixing it and walking on the other proved painfully uneven. She appeared like a hobbling cripple on the road, but Elizabeth needed to get back to the estate before afternoon tea in case her ladyship would be waiting for her in the parlor. The country road meandered up and down, curling right and left, for more than an hour before she twisted her foot and the heel popped off. By the hot sun that beat down on her, she surmised it to be close to the noon hour.

Elizabeth glanced around the landscape, saw nothing but green fields, and forested glens spotting the scenery in every direction. There were no houses in eyesight. Not a carriage or horse had passed her the entire time she wandered down the road. She had not realized until now how isolated Whitefield Hall’s location sat in the English countryside. The baron no doubt owned thousands of acres in every direction. Certainly, he had tenants somewhere.

“Well, there’s nothing I can do about it,” Elizabeth blubbered. She slipped off her silk stockings, scrambled to her feet, and moaned over the state of her dress spotted with grass stains and dusty dirt at the hem. Rather than walk lopsidedly, she decided to walk barefoot and carry her shoes in hand. If she were careful to maneuver around the little stones in the roadway, perhaps she could get back by two or three o’clock with minimal discomfort. At least she knew what way she had come from, so she turned around and headed back. By now, someone must have noticed her absence. Perhaps Mr. Grove tattled to the baron about her leaving Whitefield. As far as her ladyship, hopefully, she still lay asleep in her darkened bedchamber nursing a headache.

After a few minutes and multiple missteps on tiny pebbles that caused her to scream “ouch” as they dug into the bottom of her foot, she halted, feeling like having a good cry at her stupid idea. Before shedding a whiny tear, she noticed a horse and rider approaching. She wiped her sweaty brow and shielded her eyes from the sun to get a better look. To her alarm, the baron approached, sporting a displeased frown as he sat high on his saddled stallion.

Instead of feeling relieved at the rescue, she stood silently waiting for his reprisal. A few moments later, he halted the horse and took note of her disheveled appearance and bare feet peeking out from beneath her skirt. To her embarrassment, they will filthy from the dusty road.

“A damsel in distress, I see.
